ted turner

caleb just called me to tell me about another run-in with ted turner. for those of you who don't know ted is a big figure in atlanta and recently his new penthouse was completed. it's on the top floor of an old building he recently renovated for use by the turner foundation. anyway, not like he hangs out in atlanta all that much, as he's a globetrotter, but recently he's been staying here and has become a neighbor and, like other neighbors, going to the local coffee shop. the thing with ted though, is that he's kind of like a tornado, not just "any guy." george, the coffeeshop owner, does a good immitation of what he sounds like, coming in straight after coming out of bed, and going "any idea what the damn time is?" this morning caleb was over there when ted barged in and got in this big argument with some woman. caleb says he sounds like a "really crazy southern fag" in terms of his accent and delivery. lol. i personally have never seen him, although apparently everybody else has. he goes out walking or walks over to cnn early in the morning but i'm never up that early. i pass the door of his building every day as well but so far we have not collided.

Life Quotes

I like quotes. A lot. Recently I came across a good cache of quotes about life. I picked out some favorites, which were the dark ones (those are wittier anyway).

Any idiot can face a crisis--it's this day-to-day living that wears you out.
- Anton Chekhov (1860--1904), Russian physician/author

In the fight between you and the world, back the world.
- Franz Kafka (1884--1924), novelist

In times like these, it helps to recall that there have always been times like these.
- Paul Harvey, (1918--), U.S. radio commentator

Life is a hospital in which every patient is possessed by the desire to change his bed.
- Pierre Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867), French poet

Life is divided into the horrible and the miserable.
- Woody Allen (1935--), U.S. film-maker

Life is one long process of getting tired.
- Samuel Butler, 1912

My life has a superb cast but I can't figure out the plot.
- Ashley Brilliant (1933--), U.S. writer

Incidentally, my high school yearbook quote was "The best lack all conviction, while the worst are filled with passionate intensity." (Yeah, that was a dig at my classmates.) I think that was Yeats. Funny how that quote gets more meaningful the older I get.

CNN / Al Jazeera

I came across this today in Slate. The basic thrust of the article is that American media is suddenly less hostile towards Al Jazeera, although the station has not changed its "inflammatory"/"biased" attitude much. The reason? American media has become more like Al Jazeera. Even CNN admits it!

Al Jazeera
It's just as fair as CNN.

American TV news has always presented an American perspective, just as Al Jazeera presents an Arab perspective. But in wartime, the American slant has become more obvious, and as a result Al Jazeera's Arab slant has become less objectionable. Less than 18 months ago, Fouad Ajami declared in a long New York Times Magazine article that Al Jazeera was "a dangerous force." But in the wake of this war's coverage by the American media, his fears and criticisms sound quaint. Ajami blasted the channel's "shameless" promos, including a montage of scenes that portrayed a clear sympathy for the Palestinians. But how different are MSNBC's or CNN's montages of heroic American soldiers set to patriotic, martial music? Or the recurring shots of Americans saving babies and handing out candy to children? Ajami also criticized Al Jazeera for focusing too much on the tragedy of a single individual, 12-year-old Muhamed al-Durra, a Palestinian shot and killed in Gaza. But American networks pull similar heartstring-tugging tricks, the latest being the mediathon over the rescue of Jessica Lynch, a single American POW. (American television ignores, for the most part, the lives and the deaths of Brits and Iraqis.)
