well, i had a volunteer shift at the library book sale and predictably, i could not resist picking up a few books, you know, one, two, four... ten ;)
here's what i got:
grimm's complete fairy tales
here on earth by alice hoffman
the river king by alice hoffman
merrick by anne rice (never read it, figured $1 was ok)
nebula awards showcase 2000 (year's best sf/f)
england: the rough guide 2000 (for trip planning)
the new pocket anthology of american verse (©1955)
the crimes of love by marquis de sade
"history of red october" (illustrated russian kids' book about russian revolution... from 1988... the last commie kids book????)
wagner's operas (circa 1937, for daniel)
some weird japanese disc that won't play... maybe it's a dvd, haven't checked
it's funny, both alice hoffman books were on my "to read" list, since storm had recommended her very strongly -- she's her fav author.
lots of reading in my future, as always.
...and i was very entertained.
except for the usual inplausibility inherent in the genre, no complaints from me.
and my favorite character? nightcrawler. i want to be him for halloween. i'm already thinking... costume... and then who but me could so easily come up with crazy sh*t to say in german? i have to learn some prayers, i'll be set :)
at the library sale, they had a few cds and vhs tapes. i saw this one cd that had a japanese label and some cartoons, and said, ok, let's get that and see what it is. i stuck it in my comptuer, wouldn't play. put in my cd player, wouldn't play. aha, it's a dvd! so i put it in and yes, it is. it's in running right now and... hmmm, still not sure WHAT it is. it's in english. it's the philosophy of some guy. i SUSPECT it's some kind of home-burned cd done by a cult. it starts out like its this movie video with traditional music, only all it is is people doing tai chi or something. then suddenly there's this guy talking about how bad the world is, the wars, shots of albania... his philosophy... it is, er, interesting. i will have to watch it all at some point and report. for now, i am happy i took the initiative to buy this thing. my $1 surprise.
ADDENDUM: just watched it for some minutes. it's a falun gong video. wtf? it was just in a plastic case. i wonder if somebody donated it or planted it? huh. anyway, if the narration wasn't in english, i wouldn't have had a clue.
