I wanna see Pirates!

I'm off to New England for a long weekend and I dearly hope somebody gets it into their head that we need to go to the movies. I know what *I* want to see. Probably we'll go Sunday, if we go, since it's not like Vermont really has a whole lot of movie theaters and that's where I'll be, and I am going to put in my word for Pirates of the Caribbean. I am especially adamant about this after reading this review by Roger Ebert.

Here's my fav paragraph of it:

And yet the movie made me grin at times, and savor the daffy plot, and enjoy the way Depp and Rush fearlessly provide performances that seem nourished by deep wells of nuttiness. Depp in particular seems to be channeling a drunken drag queen, with his eyeliner and the way he minces ashore and slurs his dialogue ever so insouciantly. Don't mistake me: This is not a criticism, but admiration for his work. It can be said that his performance is original in its every atom. There has never been a pirate, or for that matter a human being, like this in any other movie. There's some talk about how he got too much sun while he was stranded on that island, but his behavior shows a lifetime of rehearsal. He is a peacock in full display.

Drunken drag queen? Say WHAT? I totally picture myself thinking of that Curse of the Tight Ass pic fic!

Friday Five: Friends

I like today's Friday Five Maybe I should ask it to be my best friend.

1. Do you remember your first best friend? Who was it?
Yes, for sure. Christine Petrella. She was another extremely weird kid, perfect match for me. We were friends starting in second grade, when I moved to a new school, until she moved to Maryland mid-way through fifth grade.

2. Are you still in touch with this person?
No, but once at UMass, probably eight years ago, I tracked her down using some phonebooks or microfiche or something and wrote her a letter saying hi and just saying what the heck was going on with me. A few weeks letter I got a reply and I was kind of surprised how things had turned out for her. Apparently after she moved, her homelife got very bad -- mom started drinking heavily, dad had an affair, I think her brother got into trouble, and she ended up becoming what certainly sounded like a very angry, tough person. She was doing research on something INSANELY technical that's like 95% male-dominated (can't remember what) and I got the impression she probably listened to Nine Inch Nails a lot and dominated her boyfriend.

3. Do you have a current close friend?
I have to say TWO, because on the one hand there is Caleb, who is a constant presence in "RL" but is not always completely comforting or understanding, and then there's madame_mercredi, who I've never met in "RL" but who has been a good friend of mine for two or three years now.

4. How did you become friends with this person?
I met Caleb in 1993, the second or third week of college, through Kristina, sort of by accident. It was a very fateful meeting that could easily not have happened. If I hadn't met him, it is exceedingly unlikely that the past five or six years of my life would have happened anything close to the way they have. I "met" Mercredi shortly after I started my job at Georgia Tech back in 2000, which is when I first got active in the VC fandom. It started as just commenting on one anothers fics, then we got into VC discussion, got excited of my "Lestat Rising" plot idea, then we ended up beta-reading each other' stuff... and la la la, now we have written a novel together!

5. Is there a friend from your past that you wish you were still in contact with? Why?
Definitely -- Kristina. Unfortunately I cut off all contact with her after last August she suddenly went crazy (um, again!) and suddenly moved to Philadelphia with her girlfriend. I was already worried and freaked out about that anyway, since neither of them are very stable mentally, but then there were some calls and info form her mother and ex-girlfriend (telling me their concerns and stuff she'd said/done since moving) that convinced me I really didn't want to be in touch. Oh, and then she emailed Caleb one day asking if he and Daniel could come to DC and do a sperm donation so her and/or her girlfriend could have kids. *Rolls Eyes* I'm a compassionate person and honestly I've thought about emailing her back one day since was a long-time dear, dear friend but she really really pushed my LAST nerve... grrr!
