Tearing off the wrapping paper

So tonight was the annual Darling Christmas Eve ritual and although there were 10 people missing (two sisters and their families, plus a brother-in-law and kids), I actually liked how it turned out. Having such a small crowd (6 adults and 2 kids) made the present exchange a lot less chaotic and we actually got to see what other people were getting and talk without it being a racket audible for blocks! Plus with only two children instead of seven, way less squealing and fighting over toys.

All my presents turned out to be the same size -- about the size of a trade paperback.

By far my favorite present, and the most unexpected, was from my mom: The entire 9-hour Shogun miniseries (with extras) on DVD! I could not believe it since I just added that to my Amazon wish list two weeks ago and because it's like $60. (In fact Mom tells me this is my birthday/Christmas gift since it really was way over our supposed spending limits.) I was obsessed with Shogun (the book and series) at one time and in fact, the first fan fiction I ever wrote was Shogun fan fiction. Anyway, I'm so excited I go that!

My other presents were two old silent film books, a paperback of The Dispossessed by Ursula LeGuin, and a metal & glass picture frame. I guess I'll be getting a couple presents later when my other two sisters arrive later this week, but I bet they will also be book-sized. It makes it easy for me to take everything home!

Everybody seemed to like what I got them too and the church service and buffet at home were nice. The kids, a one-year-old and a two-year-old, were adorable. I made a couple little movies of them and took pictures which I'll post here later. A Merry Christmas.
