Babies piggies... oooh!

On the Petfinder page for the guinea pig rescue where I got my dears, April has posted listing for some of the 20 (!) baby piggies she rescued from a gas station parking lot, where they had been dumped. THEY ARE SO CUTE! (Look towards the bottom half of the page, at the ones listed as Baby.) Gah! There are at least 5 of them I wish I could have -- esp. Oscar & Felix, with the super "bad hair." I think I understand why April got into the rescue business... they are just SO hard to resist! If I had more space, like a porch or something, I'd get more.

Cold calling

Well, today I'm being brave and cold calling (well, emailing) various businesses, in particular Downtown ones, who I think could use some help fixing their web sites. I just wrote to a local Shakespeare theater that has a site with lots of info but looks pretty crappy. Without specifically saying it looks crappy, I suggested I could improve it, should they be interested. I even told them I'd accept part of my payment in theater tickets, he he. Believe it or not, I *don't* think they'll see that as cheeky.

Now on to some corporations and such...

Web design firm with bad web site?

Actually the idea of a web design firm having a bad web site is almost a cliche. But what makes me think of it is this site here -- aaaaaaaaargh! Between the slow-loading splashy/flashy movie at the start of it, the overly perkly, loud music, the poor resolution on site copy (none in text, only as graphics or flash), it just really SUCKS. It does look better than some bad web sites, but it really isn't any good any. Pooh.

I need clients. To bad web design companies don't need my kind of help ;)

Suck

I'm sitting at Lynn's computer at CAP feeling the SUCKage because once again they have me here wrestling with the intermidable processes of trying to get a damn web traffic reports out of the latest version of WebTrends Log Analyzer. Fat chance of that happening! It's been churning on log files for an hour now and according to the pathetic little progress meter, it's only through the first month of the three-month report I'm trying for. At least today's call to their Tech Support wasn't in vain because I learned from the techie that we are running WT on a machine with less than half the capacity required to run it. Which would explain why it doesn't work. And stuff. Bah! I'm leaving this report to run on its own now and coming back tomorrow. This probably won't work but I can't just sit here 2 more hours waiting. You KNOW what mean?????!!!!! My rec on desktop-based WebTrends (a product I'd previously used heavily for 3 years): Don't touch it unless you have a screaming fast machine you won't use for anything else. I swear, this program is worse than CAD... GROAN. SIGH. SCREAM!!!!!!!!

Meanwhile my eyes are really sore and I'm also wondering what Caleb's up to. He hasn't called me on my mobile desperately panicking about my whereabouts, which normally he'd do. I'm not HOME after all. I MUST be dead, right?

I didn't get to go grocery shopping today because during my afternoon "window" when I could have, this crazy storm was dumping all kinds of rain and wind on Atlanta and I didn't want to go out in it. Sigh. If it hadn't been for the weather, I'd have been GONE by the time CAP called me to come work on this WebTrends shit!

One non-sucky thing for today is spent a bunch of time investigating that whole quarterly estimated taxes thing. I think I *might* be able to figure this out myself but if not, should be easy for my CPA. What I find just really weird is how I can basically just tell the gov't "OK, I guess my taxable income in 2004 is this, here's 1/4 of what I owe, trust me." And next year I just look a the real figures and either pay more to make up for underestimate or take a refund and apply it to 2005 taxes. (Aaaah, I'm actually UNDERstanding this, I'm scared!)

Second non-sucky thing: Caleb just called. He's funny... He told me I should bill for the 2 hours the report is running and I'm not here to watch it. I don't find that very ethical so I doubt I will.

(no subject)

I'm finally WRITING something, my rewrite of Asylum. Quite pleased. I seem to have managed to have made the autistic character write like Gertrude Stein. Which is COOL I think ;) The personality change will really stand out -- all I'll need to do is write a complete sentence from his POV.

Hmmmm

So I was on the NY Times web site (gee...) and this catches my eye:

http://www.nytimes.com/ads/johnkerry/kerry_nyt_20k.swf

This is a Flash movie, which I can't really show in LJ but if you click on it, you'll get it full screen.

Am I the only one thinking Kerry's campaign needs to get some more talented artists to work here? I mean, crude can be cute, but hell, this is a little childish! In fact, it brings to mind some Flash movies I've made, which is NOT much of a compliment!
