Immigrant life spans

Today's Atlanta paper had a news item which was a bit different from their usual domestic & word news subjects, as it wasn't about war, death or disaster. It was just really interesting...

Immigrants live longer than native Americans

The records showed the average American-born black man could expect to reach 64, while a black man born overseas probably would live beyond 73 if he immigrated. In the case of an African-born man remaining in his homeland, he might well have died before his 50th birthday.

Help, I'm stuck on a messy desk!

Somebody in Outworlders told me J.K. Rowling had relaunched her personal web site as a real author web site; previously it was just some links to publishers, very boring. I'm always curious about author web sites, so I checked it out. Verdict: This Flash design is really, really annoying! It's a cute idea but carried out too far and quite cumbersome. Oh, well, guess if you can afford it, maintaining that poor judgement shouldn't be a big deal.

Some day I should do some kind of article on standards for author web sites; I form more and more ideas all the time.

Harry Potter fanfic

I was just on the BBC News web site and not even looking, I run into THIS headline:

Rowling backs Potter fan fiction

Main stipulations:

"Her concern would be to make sure that it remains a non-commercial activity to ensure fans are not exploited and it is not being published in the strict sense of traditional print publishing."

[Lit agent rep] said writers had to ensure that the stories were not obscene and were credited to the author and not to JK Rowling.

He said: "The books may be getting older, but they are still aimed at young children.

"If young children were to stumble on Harry Potter in a an x-rated story, that would be a problem."

I know slashers won't be overjoyed byt this, but overall, I'd say this is pretty good!!!!! It certainly allows for canon-base stories and re-imaginings, which is better than nothing, for sure! And considering how incredibly territorial JKR has been about Harry Potter stuff, how liable to threaten lawsuit, etc., rather amazing actually...

I had heard something about how some people have a fetish for people (or at least pictures of people) with extra limbs and/or appendages, but until I found this web site, I hadn't seen examples of where this fetish can go...

Collapse )

Now I'm wondering, are their multilimb fetishists who are also furries? If so, do they get off on digitally altered pictures of people in specially modified bunny suits? Or are those horse/donkey costumes OK?

BTW, link came to me courtesy of the lovely Dan Savage.

This quiz has me pegged!

-- Personality Disorder Test - Take It! --

Histrionic = People with histrionic personality disorder are constant attention seekers. They need to be the center of attention all the time, often interrupting others in order to dominate the conversation. They use grandiose language to discribe everyday events and seek constant praise. They may dress provacatively or exaggerate illnesses in order to gain attention. They also tend to exaggerate friendships and relationships, believing that everyone loves them. They are often manipulative.

Oh, dear, that doesn't sound good. I will say that I *don't* believe everybody loves me, although a lot more people love me than I ever dared to dream would.
