Fictitious German Couple

Remember the recent story of that German couple who didn't know you had to have sex to get pregnant? Well, it was a hoax that made its way all around the world. Snopes provides a good analysis of what elements of the story make it so evidently false. I had had some of the same thoughts myself (esp. the bit about doing tests before asking them about sexual habits) but still kind of bought it. Doesn't mean there aren't any people really like that though... ;)

You Guessed Me!

Oh, dear... This cracked me up, particularly since it's guessed me accurately six times in a row! I pretended I was Mussolini, Bill Cosby, Seinfeld, Hawkeye from M*A*S*H, Dubya, and Barney Miller and its logic found me out every time. Clever!

Guess the Dictator and/or Television Sit-Com Character

I got this link off the Howard Stern web site. It's weird... I NEVER listen to him but damn, his site has some interesting links, esp. related to Bush, for obvious reasons.

ADDENDUM
Hmmm, I just did it two more times. Surprisingly, I am only the second person to pose as Stalin. How is THAT possible? Meanwhile like 700 people had tried Castro. Oh, and it guessed me for Carla from Cheers. I find it fascinating. This program must have a LOT of clues in its database!

PocketUhhh

OK, I'm going back to work now but before I do, another fun link:

PocketUhhh

Kind of like a soundboard programmed with all the sounds Bush made at that press conference a while back, where he didn't say anything...

That's my name?

Just posted this to androgynes, though I'd repost it here in my own journal.

Sometimes I really get weird gender dysphoria. Not like I used to, but I swear I was just filling out a form and had a weird feeling, like "My name is WENDY?" No matter how femme I act at times, if my name were a guy's name, I'd be cool with that, even if the rest of the world wouldn't be. I mean, while I am accepting of my female nature in a way I never used to be, I am accepting of my male nature as well. I think of myself as me and when I see I have this girly-girl name I want to say "Who picked that?!" Was my mom's favorite girl name. How completely dorky. Anyway, I look at that name and it seems so completely outside me, just like people's perceptions of me seem so completely outside me. They can't comprehend and their minds will forever wrap me inside a comfortable cocoon where I am a woman and that is how I exist. But I don't think I really know what a woman is or what a man is, it all blurs together. Sorry, rambling, but this is the spot for it, right?

Name Popularity

I'm always a bit fascinated by lists of names or name popularity calculators. Here is one I find quick and easy:

wendy is the #115 most common female name.
0.185% of females in the US are named wendy.
Around 235875 US females are named wendy!
source namestatistics.com

darling is the #1931 most common last name.
0.007% of last names in the US are darling.
Around 17500 US last names are darling!
source namestatistics.com

About the only place where Darling is a somewhat more common name is the Northeast, specifically New York. That is in fact where some Darlings, from England, settled. I supposed there's someplace in England with dorky-named folks too...

Found out my grandmother's maiden name, Bunge, is like barely on the list: #19,278! And my mom's maiden name, Nienburg, doesn't score at all, I guess because no Nienburgs besides my grandfather and his brother ever came to U.S.? LOL.

Just to be like lydia2600

26 days 'til England....

(That could be a song title!)

Right at the moment Caleb is doing a good job I get plump with money (or at least send out invoices begging) by sending me all kinds of work for his company and negotiating me good deals. This way I can actually spend money on vacation without worrying :)

The fact that I've got quite a few other checks due to come in this month is making the outlook, in contrast to last month, quite rosy. Sure, I have to pay quarterly taxes, but not of my *personal* checking account, so that's cool. And if my booth at this weekend's festival does well, I'll be flush up with clients all summer maybe I'll be able to edge back from panic.
