Just had a very atypical work day...
Absolutely exhausted by spending all day up in, of all places, Buford, Georgia, a small town up north of Atlanta, near Lake Lanier. Caleb and I drove out around 8 a.m. and from 9 to 5 conducted interviews with various town "stakeholders" about the city, local shopping, parks, housing, etc. -- the good, the bad and the ugly.
Caleb's work is quite understaffed at the moment for planning work, which is why *I* am out there (getting paid by the hour) helping them.
I conducted four 45-60 minuute interviews, each of them with somebody who'd lived in this small town all their life and had 3-4 generations of relatives before them who'd called Buford home. Two of the guys were like 70 and had "dirt" on everybody and everything, which was pretty funny. I think somehow it tickled my latent journalistic instincts ;)
I did 3 interviews in the morning and then for lunch two people from the city planning staff took us out to this fancy restaurant on the uber-Old-South main street. It was real
yummy! Actually I really like these occasional opportunties to visit these small towns and cities, since they're actually The South, unlike Atlanta, he he. A lot of towns I've visited are quite pretty too.
Afterward I had only one more interview and then Caleb had two more. I sat in on one with this English guy Mick who'd (for some
reason!) lived in Buford since 1982 and is a bit of a local tycoon, owning several busineses and properties around town. He had fancy cufflinks and to me seemed funnily out of place there, not to mention his extremely weird English/Buford accent (e.g. using y'all and cheerio in the same sentence).
During Caleb's last interview I got bored so I went on a walk around the downtown. It was *quite* hot out (about 100) and muggy and ugh, in dark gray wool suit, that is just gross! Finally around 5 we got to go home finally, which involved the highway... YUCK I am so, so, so glad I never, ever have a need to go out on those hideous things, they're an invention of the devil!
I'll post some pictures I took in town and on the highway, but right now I need to have a shower and chill out. Since I don't have a story up for discussion, I'm skiping out on writer's group. I've had more than enough talking and "meeting" today!
