All quiet, mainly

Despite the bombshell of Caleb telling me I'd have to get that web work done before we leave, my day basically resolved itself extremely smoothly and my evening was even (dare I say it?) rather boring.

A few tidbits here and there...

- Just about finished all of Mat Man's product pages. Now working on figuring out what is missing and doing the main pages for each of the six mat categories. (In case you are wondering, the category are logo mat, counter mats, entrance mats, antifatigue mats, safety anti-slip mats, and runner matting.) I think I will have done what I promised him I do before I leave.

- Went to CVS to pick up some prescriptions WOW! did the pharmacy tech do me a favor! She was ringing me up and noticed that my insurance wasn't coming up on one of them and I was being billed full price, which is like $100! She checked into it and it seems that BCBS only pays for once bottle a month and since I already got a bottle on the 8th, it wasn't covering another one. The thing is, I'm getting the prescription because I'll be in England when it runs out! Anyway, she talked to the other techs and figured out all I need to do is buy the stuff today (July 1) and the insurance should cover it. She voided the thing out and will ring it up again tomorrow. Nice lady!

- Called up this girl Ashleigh who lives upstairs and will be taking care of my piggies and birds while I'm gone. She's coming over Friday morning so I can show her what to do. She lives right upstairs and is all excited about doing it, really loves animals, so that'll be good.

- Gave my birds' cage a *thorough* cleaning tonight. I really don't do this as often as I should. Sometimes I just wash down some of the perches and feeders, but don't actually clean out the bottom or the metal parts. Tonight I soaked and scrubbed absolutely everything, rotated in new toys, and then vacuumed and scrubbed that entire corner of the room. The birds went back in the cage and I think they didn't recognize it at first :)

- Caught a bunch of the Beastie Boys' "To the 5 Boroughs" special on MTV 2. It was BB's introducing video clips by rappers from each of the NYC boroughs, which I thought was pretty cool, esp. since they had Run DMC, yay.

D**** stupid communication problem

Well, found out the deal with the Wraeththu LARP flap.

Turns out they were trying to keep the Wraeththu portion of it on the "down low" for now. However, nobody told ME about this. I've been helping to promote the event within the Wraeththu fandom with the web site, description, mention in Inception, etc. Nobody ever bothered to tell me not to tell anybody else in the LARP world and so I guess the small post I made caused a stir and undermined the element of surprise. Maybe they didn't consider the possibility that even though I'm not in Germany I could still contact German LARP forums?

I don't feel too bad about this now because honestly nobody ever gave me any warning! I would have liked to have known something because I do try to be careful and respect people's plans but when all the information I am given says one thing and then I find out it's a distortion and there are things I don't know, then it's impossible for me to know when I've made some mistake.

Jumpers

So today in Atlanta another guy threatened to jump of an overpass! This has happened 1-2 time a week for the past month over various major streets and interstate highways in Midtown or Downtown. In one case the a jumper slipped out of rescuers hands as he was being taken down and he fell like 30 ft. onto the highway, busted himself up a bit (though not critically). Every time this happens there is a huge traffic backup. I wonder what is causing this rash? Just copy cats?

(no subject)

The Wooden Rocket Awards -- a popular poll of the "best" SF & fantasy web sites, of all kinds -- have just been announced. The problem with popular voting is often people will vote on a web site b/c they like the company even if the web site totally sucks. Also, in the world of SF/F I think there is the problem of people just not having any taste!!!!! (OK, that was catty of me, but somewhat fair I think!) Case in point, winner for best publisher site is Tom Doherty Associates (a.k.a. Tor Books) and a runner up is Meisha Merlin. Both of these sites are terrible! Actually to be fair, the Tor site has improved recently, looks like they bothered to update it a bit, and MM's site does in fact have a lot of information... but both of them are ugly and don't look nearly as professional as they should. Man, I would love to redo those sites or web sites for other publishers. I mean, obviously they know about books, they have artists who do covers, but they can't find any decent graphic designers to do a web site?

Good, bad

Good news at the pharmacy: Got my medicine for $25 today b/c the insurance covered it this month. (Didn't cover it yesterday because I'd already got some earlier in the month.)

Bad news at the pharmacy: My hearing is so shot from this sinus thing that when the cashier gave me the price, I thought she said $95 and started to complain. No progress on the ear front, I'm afraid. Every time I exhale it seems to up my throat and into my ears. I'm having trouble modulating my voice because I hear it coming straight from my throat, and I'm having trouble hearing people speak because my ears seem to be some kind of vacuum.

In other news, Caleb is encouraging me to get my allergy shots despite the cost. Or find some way to blow my insurance deductible. Of course that would involve me *spending* money so probably it won't happen. Aargh.

Saw a guy just now with a 5-inch high realistic portrait of MLK tatooed on his upper arm. A white guy.

Doing the "Rocky" Run

Seems that like 30 years after Rocky came up, people are still charging up those steps in Philadelphia!

Philly tourists still mimic 'Rocky Run'

I'm pretty sure I went up those steps myself on my trips there when my sister used to live there -- and I too thought of Rocky. The view from up top is really amazing, as is that whole area around Benjamin Franklin Parkway with all the museums and grand vistas.

Piggy Communities

Yesterday I joined the guinea_pigs community. Glad I found it now when I'm about to leave town or I'd be spending the next week looking at cheeseball pictures of cute rodents :) Although tomorrow I think I will also sign up for rateyourpiggy and enter Abbie & YinYang into the competition. I'm confident that Abbie, at least, can get a "10"!
