Mayor Lashes Out

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin:

"I keep hearing that it's coming. This is coming. That is coming. My answer to that is B.S. Where is the beef? Because there is no beef in this city."

More here.

I'm pretty sure our mayor, Shirley Franklin, would be saying the same thing. There comes a point when politeness not only doesn't work, but becomes utterly dangerous.

P.S. Yes, I broke my news ban, but only b/c it's morning and I always check the news in the morning. No more for rest of day.

Bridgette / Mercredi and Katrina, Pt. 2

Just to let everybody know, Bridgette (madame_mercredi) responded to my post about her, giving a few more details of what's up with her family in Louisiana:

She told me in chat she'll be posting more. We IM'd last night and she is waiting to "get her head together," as this entire week has been terrible, filled with worry and stress and horror. She's esp. worried about her grandparents, whom her family *hopes* to be able to rescue Monday, but nobody is sure if that can happen.

Morning snuggles

Luckie is so precious. This morning she waited 'til 7:10 or so to wake me up. She was climbing all over me, pouncing on my fingers, head-butting me, snuggling at various intersections... It was so nice to have some affection first thing in the A.M.

Of course I knew in the end I'd have to get up and fill her food bowl ;) Also filled up the piggies vegies bowl and uncovered the birdcage. Then I went to bed again.

Happy Birthday, Dad

Today is my dad's 72nd birthday!

We are all (Dad included) very glad he actually MADE IT to this birthday, considering how things were with him earlier this year. He almost died two or three times, mostly due to hospital incompetence. However, as of a few days ago, he's off his cane and able to be independent again, doing the supermarket shopping, getting a haircut, etc.

Oh, and here's a picture showing Dad at his best & most content:

Richard Henry Darling, 9/2/1933 -

He's had to sell the boat, because it was too expensive to keep and he wasn't healthy enough to use it often, but it gave him such happiness in the years he had it. Some of my best memories of Dad are he and I out sailing off Cape Ann.

Mini relief effort

I just took care of the hurricane refugee care packets I wanted to do. One of the barber shops downstairs (a classic black barber shop, BTW) is doing a special event Sunday, offering free haircuts and clothes to any refugees who come, and I decided I could pitch in too. So I went to CVS and bought $50 worth of stuff, including gallon-size Ziploc bags, and made up six packets: 2 for women, 2 for men, and 2 for kids. All the adult ones had practical toiletry items like toothpathe, deodorant, tissues, etc., plus memo pads and pens. For the women I put in tampons and cocoa butter skin cream. The kids got more creative stuff, including crayons, markers, drawing paper, colored pens, and little notebooks to write in. And everybody got Tootsie Rolls. I put the packets together and dropped them off at the barber shop, where they were happy to have them.

Once again proving you don't have to go to church or believe in any particular religion in order to be moral and do good in this world. Although I was raised as a good Methodist.

Just finished going over the Dragon*Con schedule and marking off what I want to go to. Now it's time to get dressed, which is fun, fun, fun! First stop for me will be the Outworlders table, so I can figure out when I am volunteering this weekend -- nobody ever got back to me on that -- and then at 8:30 the Gothic Journeys track (which which I'm not affiliated) is doing a thing on Lovecraftian influence on horror and dark fantasy, which sounded good. There's a Writer's Track panel on using the senses in your writing, also sounds good. And then I will wander around and have fun!

I have *got* to get somebody to take a picture of me in this outfit. Got these new tights on I got in Italy and they are CRAZY! And I have 2-3 in. chunk heels on and my hair "up" so I think I'm about 6'6" now. And wearing a tube top... :)
