My toof

I wish I knew why my tooth -- the one with the temp crown -- only hurts at night. The pain starts around the time I go to bed, kind of dull, and can be thwarted with aspirin, but it seems to come roaring back around 4 or 5 a.m. Last night it woke me up and it was really bad. I took aspirin, but after a half hour I was still awake moaning, so I got up and rubbed a bunch of Orajel around. Made my whole mouth numb and drooly, but I fell asleep within 5-10 minutes. And when I woke up, no pain. No pain during the day either, unless I drink something hot or cold or bite into something really hot.

On a related note, my dear dentist, Dr. Michaels, left me a message on my voicemail last week, the day after the Goblet of Fire-length procedure, just checking to see if I was OK and giving me his office and home number in case I was in any unsual pain or having problems. Awwwwww. I wuv my dentist. His office is SO cool, he has all the latest gadgetry, there are lit scented candles in the office bathroom, and he shops at Target for accessories, Miami for his clothes. AND he's a good dentist and a nice man. And cute, which I'm sure his partner (life partner, not dental partner, he has his own practice) appreciates.

Recipe: ROULADEN

I've invited my co-workers over for a little after-work "soiree" tomorrow night and as part of that, I'm making something for dinner. For the vegetarians, there will be lovely stuffed cabbage rolls smothered in stewed tomatoes. And for the meat-eaters (and I admit, me, because I can't resist) there'll be one of my absolute favorite family recipes, rouladen. What is it? Well, I guess stuffed beef rolls is the best way to describe it. You take a beef roast and cut it 1/4" thick, then take each slice and put a half slice of bacon, a spoonful of diced onions, and a couple slices of baby pickle, roll it up, and stew it in a pot with some bacon, onions and pickle juice. It is SO good, and no, there is just not any sort of vegetarian equivalent. So if you eat meat and like to cook, this is good stuff. And I think you'll like it even if you "don't like German food."

My rouladen is cooking on the stove right now. It smells so good. It's only every 2-3 years I actually cook meat. But this is something my Oma always made and I love, love, love it.

My teachers would be proud

I actually studied from the book the writers of the test say they used to write the test. And I studied it at the same school as the professor who did the latest edition: UGA.

Yum, ow, yum, ow!

Just had a little "mini" rouladen I made as a tester. It was DELICIOUS, but the hot food has set off my tooth, the one with the temp crown. Ow, ow, ow!

Got a call today from the dentist's office saying my crown has shipped in early and so they could put it in tomorrow. Only I didn't want to have to go through a party with yummy food and possibly have my mouth be traumatized from having a new crown installed. So we're doing it Monday.

I'm having an aspirin now and eating another rouladen. As a test. Yes, as a test.

Al set, just about

Well, the rouladen and the cabbage rolls are both done, ready to be reheated tomorrow. Meanwhile I've laid out just about everything else in advance, except for things like beer, wine and cheese that have to be refridgerated, crackers and cookies are still in the packages, olives in the jar, etc. The glasses are all out, fancy napkins, a big tray of antique silverware (which I polished up just now), stacks of Staffordshire china plates and serving dishes. It's not a huge amount of food, since it's really only for 7-8 people, but the presentation and quality is excellent, I must say. I always love the opportunity to entertain like this; possibly it's one of the major "womanly" things I really picked up from my mom, who was never a great housekeeper but knew how to prep and set up for company.
