Another Day in Andover

Today was an odd mix...

Went shopping at the amazingly dowdy, "townie" supermarket my parents have always gone to, DeMoulas/Market Basket, where I got ingredients for vegetarian lasagna, plus a toy DeMoulas semi-truck.

Made not one but TWO lasagnas, after calcalating that the tin pans mom had bought weren't deep enough for the whole recipe, which involved large quantities of roast vegies. Put them both in the fridge for later baking (Thurs. and Fri.) They should be yummy!

Watched 5-6 episodes of "Top Chef" Season 1, which I missed because I was too busy watching "Project Runway" to watch that, too! At one point Mom came in and confessed she had intentnionally kept herself away from watching it because she was worried she would get as addicted to it as she was to "that fashion show."

Got a phone call from Caleb and Daniel updating me on Luckie, who is being a hellion. She's hiding and/or hissing, has knocked stuff off the dresser, and has apparently shifted the living room rug over several feet through repeated crazed, high-speed leaps off the armchair. I talked to her over the phone but all I got was hissing.

Moved stuff out of the dining room and into the garage. Man, now that my parents have only one car, their garage is half full of JUNK. *sigh*

While watching "Top Chef," was productive, folding up a load of Mom and Dad's underwear and stringing up "Gelt" (chocolate money) and Hersey's Kisses to hang on the Christmas tree.

Around 10 my sister Nancy, who's staying at her inlaws elsewhere in town, came by and we had tea and Mom's sandtorte, which she baked earlier. Even though Nancy had been up since 5 a.m. she stayed over for two hours yapping with me and Mom, while Dad fell asleep.

Tomorrow Nancy, my parents and I are going to the new L.L. Bean store in Burlington. Mom says if I find anything I like (their catalog has non-blue jeans!) she'll get it for me as a present, as she claims she's "short" on presents for me. (We're doing presents Friday when my other siblings are here.)

21 Firsts

1.Who was your first prom date?
First and only: Ed Moore. I asked him to go with me, just so we could both have dates. He took 2-3 days to say yes. Later he confessed that he was hesitant because he thought going out with me would make him look gay.

2. Who was your first roommate?
Not counting my various siblings (who shifted in and out of the house 'til I was around 15), a girl named Emilie, my first semester at UMass Amherst.

3. What alcoholic beverage did you first drink?
Eggnog with rum in it, probably. But for a more traditional "drink," definitely champagne, which my parents let me have on New Year's starting in middle school.

4. What was your first job?
Page at Memorial Hall Library here in my hometown, Andover, Mass.

5. Who was your first love?

6. When did you go to your first funeral?
When I was 9 and my grandmother died. Besides that I've only been to three other funerals.

7. Where was your first kiss?
My high school friend Teresa kissed me the summer after we graduated, which finally lit the lightbulb in my head about what I actually liked.

8. Who was your first grade teacher?
Mrs. Crowley, who must've had the patience of a saint to deal with me, as I was a total hellion. She kept a chart on the blackboard charting my behavior for every class period and sent me home with a daily behavior report card, for my mother. She was also the one who recommended me for a full psych screening, I think.

9. Where did you go on your first ride on an airplane?
When I was around 13 my parents decided to go for a camping trip out in the Canadian Rockies (British Columbia / Alberta) and we drove up to Montreal to get a flight out to Calgary.

10. When you snuck out of your house for the first time, who was it with and how old were you?
I never snuck out of the house. Ever.

11. Who was your first best friend and are you still friends with them?
Daniel Crane. He moved to Rhode Island when I was 6 or something so no, we are no longer in touch.

12. Where was your first sleepover?
Must've been at my friend Christine's house a few streets from here. She was my best friend for several years in elementary school, until she moved to Maryland. Later I had fun times with Dee coming over. (dharmagirl, HAMFIGHT!)

13. Who is the first person you talk to in the morning?
Luckie, my cat.

14. Whose wedding were you in the first time?
At my sister Nancy's wedding, when I was 7, I handed out rice packets at the reception, which was here in the house. I know that doesn't make me part of the "wedding party" but it was a role.

15. What is the first thing you do in the morning?
Call Luckie so she'll hop on the bed and cuddle with me. Either that or answer some phone call that's woken me up.

16. What was the first concert you ever went to?
Not counting anything I went to with my parents, a 1992 free concert in a big park on the Rhine near Bonn / Cologne -- featuring Bay City Rollers and Showaddywaddy. How embarrassing is that?

17. First tattoo or piercing?
Got my ears done when I was in 9th grade, at Pyramid Mall in Ithaca, NY. I was visiting my sister Nancy, who asked Mom if she could take me to have it done and finally Mom said I was old enough.

18. First celebrity crush?
Jack Haley as "The Tin Man" in Wizard of Oz. (Me, liking effeminate men wearing eyeshadow? No way! I used to get *tingly* every time I saw him in the movie!)

19. First crush?
After the fact, I realized I had had a crush on my German exchange student friend Gisela, in high school.

20. When was your first detention?
Never got detention. In elementary school I missed about half my recesses for being a noisy hellion, but after that I was a straight arrow, or at least worked it so I didn't get detention.

21. First time being arrested?
Me getting arrested? For what? Wearing three kinds of plaid? Indecent exposure? Walking too fast on the sidewalk?

P.S. I like this meme too much to put it behind a cut.
P.P.S. Due to browser issue, I had to do this in IE. Ugh, I hate IE.

All over the place

I don't know how much time I'll have to post since there are random family members appearing and disappearing, but anyway...

Went out on a shopping run with parents and Nancy, during which Mom returned/exchanged several gifts she's bought and -- yay! -- bought me a couple pairs of very nice pants at the new L.L. Bean in Burlington. And except for at Bean, there were no long lines and so Dad has no reason to get impatient.

Back here, Mom and Dad had lunch and took naps before Tom and family showed up. Then it was cute grandkids running all over. I've never seen my nephew Joe before since he's only 7 mo. Cute cute cute!

At 3:30 Mom went to take Dad to dialysis and a while afterward, Nancy and family showed up. So two more nephews for me! Ian, who just started college this fall, has grown a beard and, um, like most "first beards," it's not a pretty sight, but I wouldn't say anything. His dad has a beard (has since I was in diapers!) so I'm sure it's a natural experiment. Who knows if he'll keep it.

Anyway... everybody was over, it was fun, and then Nancy et al. had to go back across town to the other set of parents. Soon as they pulled out, Mom pulled in :) We all had grandkid fun for a while before having the lasagna I prepped yesterday. OMG, was that GOOD! Mmmmmm! We have lots more (including one whole more pan uncooked) for tomorrow and Saturday.

Right now Mom's picking Dad up from dialysis again, Tom's out in the car trying to get Joe to sleep, and Cathy's in the den trying to get Owen (4) to sleep. So of course I've snuck off to check email, LJ, etc. Around 9 Nancy et al. will be back I think.

I'll have some cute pics to post later.
