2007 Begins, Cat Update

Well, it's 2007. Yikes, it's THE FUTURE now!

Went to an early evening New Year's party at a neighbors' house, rested a bit at home, then went over Daniel's, where the boys and I ate, watched TV and rang in the New Year.

At home, Luckie is being all snuggly again, over the craziness. I wonder if she'll go nuts again tomorrow if somebody visits. (Thanks for all the suggestions on what might help her out, BTW. I think I may try Rescue Remedy, as now that I'm reminded, I remember being told worked very well.)

Happy New Year

Munich: Another POV

yakalskovich had a very busy December but now she's finally got around to post some of the pics she took while Caleb and I were visiting. There's one of me in a pirate hat and one of Caleb ghost-hunting. (cracicotus, go grab your new icon, also posted, and I can show you how to upload it.)

Anyway, the link:

There are other pics on there, too, which are also fun to look at.

Snowy Andover Video

I've been scoping out YouTube for videos from my hometown, local chains (example: this Market Basket video) and found this one shot at Rec Park, a mile / 15 min. walk from where I grew up. I learned to swim in the pond there (frozen over in this video) and used to take my dog Taffy there a couple times a week in the summer. Anyway, you can see the kind of forest -- and snowstorms -- I grew up with :)

D*ck in a Box

The boys and I *still* cannot get over this damn video. Today we were referencing it all through a shopping trip. (Actually you can just do the hand gestures to the three steps and you get the point across.)

To all the brothers out there with ladies to impress
It's easy to do, just follow these steps:
One: Cut a hole in a box.
Two: Put your junk in that box.
Three: Make her open the box.

Oh, and yes, this BEGGED its own icon.

German Family Recipes

Inspired by the trip home and by a traditional Southern New Year's meal (black-eyed peas, collard greens and cornbread) I had today at a neighbors' place, I'm going to be cooking up some family recipes this week.

First I'm going to make what Mom made every New Year's: pickled herring salad. The main ingredients are pickled herring, diced beets, apples, pickle juice and sour cream. When I was a kid I had a sort of love/hate thing going on with it, but I have this instinct that tells me my adult tastebuds will adore it. This afternoon I picked up the main ingredients and Mom is going to email me a translation of the recipe she uses, in Oma's ancient German cookbook. I have my own German cookbook here with a recipe for it but I'd like to see Mom's first.

The next thing I'm going to do is a really simple dish that I love, sweet and sour cabbage. Basically you steam up a head of cabbage with some vinegar, brown sugar, bits of apple and raisin. It's so yummy and you can heat it up as leftovers for days and the taste just gets better. Again, waiting on Mom's specifics before going forward, although I will get some cabbage at the market tomorrow.

There are a few other recipes I still need to get from Mom. I already know how to do rouladen, which I absolutely love, and I can also make Opa's recipe for corned beef hash (which he learned in the Kaiser's Army in WWI), but I still need the recipe for sandtorte (poundcake). My German cookbook has the recipe for buttercake, plumcake and applecake, which tastes close enough to Oma's and Mom's that it works. Next time I need to make a dessert for something I should bake that, as I *love* those flat yeastcakes. It's amazing how fast a cookiesheet of applecake can disappear -- blink your eyes and it's gone!

P.S. God, I'm hungry for *all* that stuff now.
