Healey

Um, well OK then!

I guess the geek circuits of my brain were quite active overnight, because the last dream I had before waking involved me, Satchel from "Get Fuzzy," and William Shatner flying through space in the belly of a giant dragon that could move at light speed.

And the solar engineer said "Let there be light!"

This is one of the most interesting news stories I've read in a while. Look at what a little education can to do empower people!

Solar power makes tiny village beam

In Gudda, a village with very little, residents are literally beaming. Just two years ago, villagers had never seen light after dark, unless it came from the moon. Then, solar light arrived and changed everything.

Think of what we are taking for granted every day that will blow the minds of these villagers. Mind you, these villagers know a lot of things that we don't know (a point often forgotten!), but still.

Stop whining and deal

So after yesterday's whine about aches and pains, a couple of interesting things have come up:

Pain Free Sleep!
Last night I'd wrapped up my "to do" list earlier than usual and was doing a crossword in bed around 11:15 when I decided to just go to bed. This is at least an hour early for me but I thought I'd give myself a gift. Anyway, I get ready for bed and then lie down... and notice all the aches and pains seems to have disappeared! I was lying flat on my back in bed, with my head up a pillow, and everything just felt perfect alligneed and pain-free -- neck, shoulders, back, hip!

It was pretty inexplicable really and on the basis of that, I decided to do a little Reiki on myself, to maybe encourage my body to remember that state. So I did that and then decided to try sleeping on my back. That didn't work, but I found that even sleeping on my side was fine, although only if I kept my legs and spine straight. This is not my ususal way to sleep, as normally I scissor my legs, twist my spine one way, my neck another, put my arms into odd positions... come to think of it, that might not be the best way to sleep, LOL. But if I just laid comfortably on my side with my arms and legs and spine in more regular positions, not twisted and splayed, there wasn't any pain.

My back has been killing me in bed for a long time now so it was pretty miraculous. No clue why I just realized it was possible to sleep without pain but hey, I hope I can do it again tonight.

You Are What You Think
The second revelation came this morning. I was waiting for a bus at Inman Park Station, doing a crossword puzzle, while meanwhile comtemplating various health problems. So my brain is there doing an internal inventory / whine of various problems -- "Ugh, my hip is killing me! Ugh, I have a headache! Ugh, this bugbite is so itchy!" It was almost like an internal OCD thing actually, with thoughts going round and round, escalating the "Woe is me!" pity party. But then something kicked in from the cognitive behavioral therapy stuff I've bee reading (more on that later), and I realized, "Wait a second, I'm reinforcing my own misery! I keep thinking about all this stuff and making myself miserable." And so I said, "OK, stop it" and voila, it stopped. I just stopped the whole line of stupid thoughts and focused on something construtive or something real happening around me, instead of building up negative thoughts to a fever pitch.

An American To Be Proud Of

Went over Daniel's after work to tend the cat and encountered a really absorbing documentary on Percy Lavon Julian. Typical of most Americans (certainly white ones), I had never heard of him. Well, duh, he was not only a breakthrough chemist, doing work that would lead to the development of the birth control pill, but he forged his achievements as a black man in the 1930s onward.
