From thefridayfive - Memories

1. Smells, and memories. Do you have a scent that when you smell it, brings up a memory? Do share.

Most everything that was ever in my Oma's apartment has her smell, even 25 years after her death. Mom has this beautiful dresser of Oma's and even now if you open one of the drawers, it smells like Oma... sort of cigarettes and oak. I have a whole collection of Oma's things and while not all of them smell (the crystal wall-lamp) some of them do (Opa's old stein). I spent a huge amount of time with Oma as a little kid and many years mourning her by smelling her stuff. I've had a lot of dreams about Oma, usually coming home to my parents and realizing Oma isn't really dead, and the tip-off in the dream is smell: "I smell Oma, how is that possible?"

2. Songs. Is there a particular song that brings back happy memories? Song title and memory, if you care to share that much.

Mostly songs from college (UMass), most of which I associate with Caleb, Kristina, the 2 in 20 floor, etc. There are so many that I made a set of 3 mixer tapes when I was leaving, with all the top songs in chronological order. To throw out one, I'll go with "Sit on my Face" by Lords of Acid, which Caleb and I would act out at LBGA dances -- which we lived for. *eg* For a less kinky song, "Always" by Erasure brings up memories of Caleb and his sappy crushes as a freshman/sophomore. I remember listening to that in his Saab "Ingrid."

3. How about a song that brings up painful memories? Song title and memory, if you care to share that much.

There's this kinky album called Cyborgasm I listened to a LOT one particular summer and, really, *used* a lot one particular summer and some months afterward. It was whole scenarios with music, like a guy going into a cab and having sex, a guy getting off, somebody fanstasing... basically audio porn. Got it at HMV in Cambridge, as I recall Some of the events of that summer (mostly the person I spent it with turning out to be clinically insane) are so distasteful that I don't think I've listened to that thing in 10 years. I just skip over. I should listen to it though... just face up. It probably sounds silly now.

4. Food. Is there a certain food that conjures up memories?

Definitely. Going back to Oma, cream cheese totally brings up my chlldhood. As a good German grandma, Oma was always filling me up with dairy -- milk, yogurt, sour cream, etc. For a snack, she's get those smaller sized Philadelphia cream cheese packets and give them to me like a candy bar. He he! I did that at my parents house too -- I definitely remember going into the fridge and cutting off a 2 in. slab of cream cheese as a snack.

5. Clothing? Do you have an item of clothing or if you see a certain item, does it make you think of a time/place or person?

Of course. I could go back to Oma (have one of her headscarves) but nah, I'll go to a couple of coats I have.

One of them is this awesome black PVC coat I got early on in college, via a clothes swap with my friend Amaele. I'd bought this sequired top that was awesome but too small and she wanted it, so I got the coat. Sadly I can't button it anymore but I do wear it unbuttoned sometimes. (It also looks great on Daniel.)

Another coat I have is this 1950s/1960s wool coat of my mom's. Very pretty, lined. She must have got it used herself, because "June" is embroidered in the inside pocket. When I wear it, which I do, I look just like my mom in the old family movies. Nobody wears coats like that any more.

Writer's Block: Your Topic

Is there a topic you can't stop writing about in your journal? Why do you write about it so much?

As to why I post so damn much, she's sort of like my daemon / kid and I can't help myself.

I have 13 Luckie icons on LJ and "cat" is among the top 2-3 tags in my journal. There are Luckie voiceposts. Besides that I have ungodly collection of photos, even movies. Oh, and she has a Facebook profile via Catbook.
