There are a lot of things we see most often in December, like caroling, potato latkes, mistletoe, mulled wine, eggnog, and returning gifts. What's your favorite holiday tradition?
Just plain SEEING MY FAMILY is really my favorite bit. The rest is gravy.
But outside of that, I really love my mom's sandtorte (German Sandtorte = "sand cake"), which is THE poundcake of poundcakes. She makes with a recipe from Oma's ancient cookbook, which is at least 100 years old. It involves 10 or 11 eggs. She usually flavors it with almond but she also has done it with rum. She bakes it in a special donut-shaped pan and it takes an hour to bake, becasue it's a fairly dry cake. We eat it sliced very thin and we usually dunk it in coffee. And we usually finish off the whole cake in a day, no matter how many or few people are around to eat it.
